Al Jama-ah Party rejects any reports and claims that its Councillor who is the Executive Mayor for the City of Johannesburg is neglecting the water crisis in the metro.
Mayor Kabelo Gwamanda was not invited to a recent crisis meeting on the water shortages in the metro, leading to mischievous reports and claims that he is not prioritising the matter.
The party can verify that Gwamanda has been engaging with a Member of Parliament, the CoJ Manager and Chair of Water on how to solve the water crisis and to ensure that water tanks are fully and equally rolled out to all the affected areas.
“The mayor has a daily slot dealing with the water crisis. I have been doing oversight on work done so far and quite pleased with the mayor’s efficiency in dealing with the crisis. There are dilapidating infrastructures which have been in existence for many years and the mayor and relevant role players are trying their best to come up with quick but long lasting solutions,” says Hon Ganief Hendricks, Al Jama-ah’s Member
of Parliament who serves on the Portfolio Committee on Water and Sanitation.
He says the party takes exception to Water and Sanitation Minister Senzo Mchunu’s comments that Gwamanda has failed to attend a crisis meeting on water. “ The
mayor was not invited to the meeting. The Minister forgets that during the reign
of the previous mayor, he himself failed to attend such meetings. I have reported
the Minister’s false claims to the PC on Water and Sanitation,” he says.
The party further calls on some media houses to refrain from publishing false reports on the mayor and instead choose not to report on successes such as
the renaming of the street name from William Nicol Drive to Winnie Mandela Drive.
