PRESS RELEASE

NO EMBARGO

10 June 2024

AL JAMA-AH welcomes the alternative date for First Sitting of the 7th Parliament to avoid it clashing with Eid ul Adha:

Al Jama-ah Party has once again proved that having a Muslim voice inside Parliament is indeed vital.

On 28th May 2024 the party’s leader and Member of Parliament wrote to the Secretary of Parliament to consider an alternative date for the First Sitting of the 7th Parliament which was scheduled for 16th or 17th June 2024, the most likely dates for Eid ul Adha.

In his letter to the Secretary of Parliament, Hendricks advised that Eid ul Adha is a religious festival celebrated by not only South African Muslims, but Muslims throughout the world and for the First Sitting to occur on any of those two days, would impact negatively on Muslim Members of Parliament and their families as well as the larger Muslim community.

It is with much relief to note that Chief Justice Zondo has now determined that the first sitting of the National Assembly will take place on Friday, 14 June 2024.

The party is thankful that Parliament has indeed considered its request for an alternative date to have the first sitting.
