Presenter: Did you at any time doubt your ability to win over the voters of Ward 9?
Councillor Imraan Moosa: Wal hamdu, as Muslims we have total faith in the Almighty, Allah subhanalla Allah. The campaign started with a beautiful ayah from the Qur’an that I always resonated with, Has bun Allah…
This gave me strength.
Presenter: What are the immediate challenges we can expect you to address in Lenasia?
Councillor Imraan Moosa: What are the changes the residents of Lenasia expect? Al hamdulillah, after two, three days, I’ve already had two sittings with the City Council. I also understand some of the dynamics of the NGOs. Changes are already happening. We started with the land invasion. The public response was favourable to my taking office as councillor and starting to address the concerns of the residents. Small business individuals wanted to take photos with me.
There has been a very warm welcome by the residents of Lenasia and it’s very heart-warming to see how they resonate.
In terms of changes, I started with some of the changes, which is the illegal land invasion issue.
I happen to be at the metro centre in Braamfontein and met Councillor Makwena. I spoke with her and I informed her I would sometimes need her assistance. She responded, saying I’m welcomed to contact her at any time.
Yesterday, I was totally alone, facing one of the challenges, which was at the railway station, opposite the police station. I found myself looking at two of the informal settlements, and seeing people erecting structures right across the police station. I immediately took some pictures. It was quite dangerous as well because some of the informal residents who were there were a bit hostile. When I left and drove off, they attempted to throw bricks and stones towards me, because I photographed their shacks which were right opposite the police station.
But I felt it my duty as a Ward councillor entrusted with the amanah that Lenasia is safe.
Consequently, I contacted Councillor Makwena who responded positively. She will see that these two shacks directly opposite the police station are demolished.
In serving the community, this is one of the responsibilities to ensure residents of Lenasia are safe and protected.
The illegal land invaders take advantage of the law in terms of the Covid-19 pandemic, you can’t readily perform an eviction. The residents of Lenasia face extreme difficulties because of these invaders. With the invaders come crime. They don’t have any means of income, therefore they infiltrate the area.
They also take water and electricity illegally from residents. All these things compromise the residents.
The houses then become devalued, because of these shacks surrounding the residential area.
The other issue I’m dealing with is the cleanup campaign. There’s poor service delivery with seven years of backlog. For example, the potholes, the street lights, and I’m attending a lot of issues currently.
I’m also busy with a feeding scheme.
I have had several meetings with the Johannesburg roadworks department as well as with NGOs.
I was also involved with an administrator of an old-age home yesterday. They broke into the premises and broke a wall. I ensured the wall was rebuilt securely for the protection of the aged and the old-age home are taken care off. These are some of the issues I’m involved with.
Presenter: Please comment on the issue of the taxi rank.
Councillor Imraan Moosa: There are meetings presently being held regarding the taxi rank. There is also dialogue with Lenasia residents. There is an opportunity for residents to engage themselves at the taxi rank so that it doesn’t impact on Lenasia at large.
Presenter: What is the message to the people who brought you to this point?
Councillor Imraan Moosa: The radio helps to communicate with residents in Ward 9.
We call upon the community to stand strong and take charge in keeping Lenasia safe. We need to rally together and dispel difference and stand united as a community. If we stand together, I’m sure we can solve the challenges on Lenasia’s boundaries.

“Hold me accountable and responsible,” said Hafeeth imam Imraan Moosa on Salaamedia on Thursday.
Imam Moosa said further: “Someone must solve Lenasia’s problems, that’s why I took it upon myself to stand as councillor candidate on 11 November.
“I’m the only candidate standing in the by-elections who was born in Lenasia. I fully understand the heartbeat, dynamics and challenges of Lenasia.
“As a Muslim, the left hand must not know what the right hand gives in the way of Allah, but since I’m being asked to talk about it, I would say we have been very successful with Hikmatul Awan in successfully initiating in benefiting orphanages and other institutions.
“I have the support of the community and businesses for the NGOs that were launched to benefit those in need.
“I served the community to the best of my ability. But there are other problems still remaining unsolved that must be addressed at a higher level.
“Hajj is at a standstill, airlines have no business. Even in Lenasia, business is retrogressing because of certain unnecessary factors.
“The community is disillusioned, and I want to make a big difference by serving the community properly.
“Al Jama-ah is solution-based If a person keeps on complaining and not finding a solution, then we will get nowhere.
“Corruption ad crime must be addressed on a different level.
“Illegal land invasion must be resolved by the City and the government.
“The illegal dumping at the shops and open spaces in Lenasia has caused that our local businesses are suffering, with most people going out of Lenasia to go shopping.
“Crime and the unpleasant environment have negatively impacted on Lenasia in all spheres.
“We are law-abiding citizens and must find amicable ways to resolve our problems.
“We must embark on a strategy of making Lenasia green to combat so that we can resolve the ugly, illegal dumping.
“Low-cost housing must be built to house the homeless so they won’t need to invade the land.
“There is a long list of other major challenges to overcome.
“Criminality, dumping at the civic center and at the shops have impacted on Lenasia’s infrastructure. The City has not maintained the infrastructure.
“Safety and crime have escalated in the past two months.
“We must address these challenges so that we can leave a decent legacy for our children.
“The beggars are another problem. Their basic needs must be resolved, they must be empowered and educated.
“We will start a clean-up campaign starting from the post office at 4 pm on Saturday.
“I’m digging into my own pocket to make this happen. Let’s start being pro-active and show the government and the community that we can bring about change.
“The government has the IDP available which we can tap into in our efforts to improve Lenasia.
“We want to make our environment healthy and safe again.
“I want to help make a difference. Let the future generation live in this difference.
“We must get involved with politics to help make a difference.
“Al Jama-ah has now committed itself to launch a constituency office where residents can have their issues resolved on three spheres of government, on local, provincial, and national levels.
“Al Jama-ah is a platform for all communities. We as Muslims have the moral fibre to keep things clean regarding corruption and crime.
“Vote for Al Jama-ah on 11 November to bring about the necessary change in Lenasia.

What the party offers:

The reason is obvious why people must vote for the Al Jama-ah party who offers to stamp out corruption. Lenasia needs to unite because we have come to a stage now that needs change. We need a candidate-councillor who can make a huge difference. I have observed we cab make a significant difference. I also want to make it clear Al Jama-ah party is a platform for everyone here in Lenasia.

Infrastructure development:
We will champion the cause of proper infrastructure in Lenasia.
Youth problem. In the past, the infrastructure doesn’t resonate with Lenasia.
The water issue is also a problem. We should approach the City of Johannesburg to change the infrastructure which should be feasible to Lenasia.

Illegal land invasion:
We intend to resolve the issue of an illegal land invasion.
Some of the residents were up in arms over the land issue.
There is no one to assist the homeless. There should be appropriate solutions to house those land invaders.

Solution offered to corruption:
R800-million lost and unaccountable for.
To combat this corruption, it should be ensured there is complete accountability. Instead, there should be an integrated development plan for demographic service delivery where the budget should be securely accommodated towards.

Crime
The Al Jama-ah is community-based and works on the ground with issues such as crime. The community must admit the City of Johannesburg has not really addressed the issues of crime in our community.
There has been poor service delivery, and I found in our Ward we really deserve some proper service delivery.

What will you do as councillor?

The community is quite aware I have been active regarding service delivery through my local NGO for the past 12 years. We now need someone to seriously address the poor service delivery.

The way forward:

I’ve already initiated some solutions regarding playing an active role in the community. Electricity is one of the most serious issues, especially affecting the elderly.
The major problems with the electricity here is wrong billing and illegal connections.
Bad service delivery in general must be resolved.
Al Jama-ah will make some concerted efforts in resolving such serious issues.

With the support of the people in Lenasia, we have the opportunity to introduce the Divine principles in our community as a moral fibre. We are quite aware that in the government as well there is so much corruption, there is so much crime. And, we are here to make a difference, Insha Allah, with the Al Jama-ah party.
What we are calling upon is to support the Al Jama-ah party. If we are the example and guidance of the Muslim community, who knows, this will be a form of dahwa as well.

My name is Imraan Moosa. I represent the Al Jama-ah party for Lenasia. We will be taking part in the by-elections for Lenasia on the 11 November and will be requesting the community of Lenasia support and vote for the Al Jama-ah party, Insha Allah.
Our intentions and directions are that we take care of the local problems that are facing Lenasia at the moment.

Firstly, there is the illegal land invasion that we find very common. We need to do something about the land invasions happening currently.

We also have poor service delivery. The government should see to the recreational facilities in Lenasia. This is where we come in to make a difference. We must find ways to attract the government in providing the necessary facilities for us. But we do not have the right people representing Lenasia to have this realised.
We have invited the mayor on Sunday to the Nirvana high school hall at 4 o’clock. We hope he can come to represent himself to the people of Lenasia in an official capacity to basically get an understanding as to what goes on on the ground.

Many of the leaders must understand we as leaders are also servants to our community. We want the mandate from this community to champion the cause of the community, to find solutions.
You have a problem, you have a solution, you have the implementation. With the implementation part of it, we will then impress upon government with an IDP process. The implementation development plan we can then impress upon national government who already has the necessary facilities for us, but we do not have the right person for this.

It is unfair on the community for political parties to suddenly become visible with their campaigns in the wake of the by-election here.

There must be the sincerity of intention. Are you doing it to the community to benefit from? And for the sake of the Almighty. This is a serious issue throughout South Africa,

With the Al Jama-ah coming in we can then work towards Al Jama-ah has a billboard at the entrance of Lenasia. Al Jama-ah is here to make a change for you.

Question: You have been in Lenasia for 59 years, where other candidates are not from here.
What will you be doing for Lenasia?
Answer: I have understood the dynamics of Lenasia since childhood.
We are solution-based and the mayor is supposed to be solving our problems.

Question: Old people of 80 stand the entire day in long queues for service delivery. What will you do to remedy this?
Answer: The party will open a constituency office in Lenasia to help with service delivery, where there will be efficiency. Al Jama-ah has the capacity to bring about change. We will have a ward councillor office as well as the constituency office. I’ve seen Lenasia degenerate and I’ve decided to make a difference through the political vehicle of Al Jama-ah.

It’s time to clean up Lenasia with a good conscience, with spiritual fibre. So we can succeed in sorting Lenasia out.
My plan, my strategy is for people of leadership to serve on the ground. And the first initiative I’ve taken is to invite the executive mayor of the City of Johannesburg, at the Nirvan centre, this Sunday at four ‘o clock. Not any councillor in the past has tried to invite the mayor.
We bring the leadership down to the ground to see what has happened to Lenasia.

I’m indeed humbled to present myself as the leader here to work on the ground to serve the community. I thank Lenasians for their support in the two, three weeks in my campaign and I hope we are successful together to clean Lenasia up and let’s get Lenasia started.
So let’s get together with a strategy I began with inviting the mayor to address the problems.

Al Jama-ah is solution-based. I don’t want to look at the problems of the past, let’s go forward.
We want to find confident, positive solutions so Lenasia moves forward and address the challenges. Not just address the challenges and leave the challenges, but rather implement the challenges.

I must say from Al Jama-ah, we are launching a constituency parliamentary office in Lenasia to sort out Lenasia’s problems – as we have come to a stage now that we need to take action together.

So, that will be one of the initiatives, to take your problems to our parliamentary office that we will open for you to address your issue.

Another aspect is Lenasia has never seen one of their young people go into parliament.
Al Jama-ah was the first to get one of Lenasia’s youth right into parliament last week.
That is one of the initiatives we kick-start will Al Jama-ah.

Question: Is the mayor here to serve the community or to promote a political party?
Answer: The mayor will be in Lenasia to serve the community and not serve any political party.

Question: Muslims are only 3% in the country. Why a religious party?
Answer: Lenasia is a religious community. We are not promoting irrelevant issues, but what concerns the community of Lenasia. We are a spiritual party who addresses issues such as corruption based on what’s right and wrong.
