Currently, Faried Achmat is the SG of the party in charge of all secretarial duties and also make sure all activities being run by the party run smoothly. He represents the City of Cape Town metro on all forms of queries from potholes, to water problems and electricity which is all classified as service delivery. He is a member of the General Appeals Committee of the Metropolitan.
From amongst the positive stories was his involvement with the environmental side where we as the party took on the city and managed to make them realise about the air toxins which was a slow death to our animals as well as many people in the area of Sandvlei.
We also managed to travel the country setting up offices throughout the country. We have started a daily door to door campaign to get all complaints from the people in the Western Cape and log all calls in order to get the city to do what they have to do

- Councillor Faried Achmat was played an instrumental role in having a mayyit (dead body) released from the mortuary recently. The mayyit has been in the morgue for more than a month as the Muslim family from Lentegeur in Mitchells Plain could not produce an identity document of their deceased relative.
- Following investigations, Councillor Achmat arranged for the family to undergo DNA tests after which the mayyit was released from the morgue for a proper burial. The family could then hold the janazzah three days later. Councillor Achmat also assisted the family with basic food items.
- Councillor Achmat is also monitoring living conditions at the Masiphumelele informal settlement in Noordhoek near False Bay. Thousands of residents’ shacks were flooded with sewerage water from surrounding canals. Due to the lack of proper and enough sanitation facilities, residents are forced to dump their waste in the canals. During heavy rainfalls the canals overflow which caused a sewage spillage into the shacks of residents. Cllr Achmat has raised the appalling living conditions at Masiphumelele several times at council meetings. The sewerage in the five canals at Masiphumelele has never been resolved by the City despite complaints by residents over the past seven years.
“It’s a pathetic site and unacceptable that our people must live in such degrading conditions,” Achmat exclaimed. He also the matter in council that apart from cleaning the canals, the whole area needs to be cleaned; more flush toilets, clean drinking water. He also reminded CoCT to build houses for the 10 000 people living in squalor at Masiphumelele. The AL JAMA-AH raised concerns over the appalling conditions seven years ago when Mrs Patricia de Lille was the mayor. In 2017 the Western Cape Environment Department instructed the CoCT to remove the weeds from the canals which would prevent flooding during heavy rainfalls. The Public Protector also instructed the CoCT to have these reeds removed, which would allow the water to flow freely.
Masiphumelele community activist, Tshepo Hlomo commended Councillor Achmat as being the only councillor fighting for their basic human and constitutional rights.”
