Honourable Adv Shameemah Salie during an oversight attended the Artists in Schools (AIS) program in South Africa specifically surrounding the Northwest province. The meeting was held at a high school in Klerksdorp.
There is currently a MOU between DSAC and DBE regarding implementation of creative arts, culture and heritage interventions in public schools in the RSA.
DBE CAPS is a policy instrument guiding the implementation of Creative Arts subject to all levels genres of music, drama, visual arts and dance
The following problems are being faced:
– Lack of qualified teachers: There aren’t enough qualified teachers to teach the creative arts, which combines four disciplines.
– Skills gaps: Both artists and educators have skills gaps. The need to ensure relevant skills are required.
– There is a lack of resources and budget constraints.
The benefits of the AIS program are as follows:
– Artists can share their talents with children.
– Artists can collaborate with other artists.
– The program can help teachers bring creative arts to life.
– The arts can help children develop critical thinking, problem solving, creativity, imagination, and innovation.
The AiS program was created to address the lack of quality arts and culture education in South African public schools.
There is a lack of an appointment of experienced agencies in each province of art auctioneers to assist at schools.
Lack of Job creation and training
Ensuring educators not qualified in arts are not impacted
