ALJAMA-AH approaches the Speaker of Parliament for assistance in the drafting of the party’s Apartheid Complicity Bill:
Al Jama-ah Party’s President, Ganief Hendricks M.P. and Deputy Minister of Social Development has settled the party’s policy on the International Convention on the Suppresion and Punishment of the Crime of Apartheid.
In 1973 the UN (United Nations) declared apartheid and racial segregation a crime under international law. The International Convention on the Supression and Punishment of the Crime of Apartheid eventually came in to effect in South Africa in June 2024.
The party has approached the Speaker of Parliament to provide the party with the required assistance to draft the Apartheid Complicity Bill.
“Israel is an apartheid state and those South Africans – including Parliamentarians–who support it, are therefore complicit and must face the full might of the law,” says Hendricks.
He says the party has the support of several honourable Members of Parliament and is positive that this Bill will ‘see the light of day.”
The Speaker will provide advocates from the Parliamentary Legislative drafting team to draft the bill which they will benchmark on a bill that was presented to Hon Mr Supra Obakeng Ramoeletsi Mahumapelo, Chairperson of the Portfolio Committee on International Relations and Cooperation. The bill, supported by 40000 Palestinian supporters who marched to Parliament earlier this month where it was handed over to Mahumapelo who accepted it on behalf of the Speaker.
“We expect that the bill will be fiercely contested by those who support apartheid,” says Hendricks. The bill will be navigated through Parliament by the party’s MP Adv Shameemah Salie.
