Fulfilling our commitment
Prior to the 2019 National Elections, Al Jama-ah committed to safeguard Muslim women’s marital rights and assist all women who have endured humiliation, injustice, and destitution in our community.
With devotion and pressure from Al Jama-ah’s three Private Members Bill’s (PMB), the pledge was fulfilled in 2023.

Action, not just words
Every democratic SA President (Pres. Mandela, Pres. Mbeki, Pres. Zuma, and Pres. Ramaphosa), cosied up to Muslims with promises that all Muslim marriages would be recognised. These promises gave Muslim women and children hope that their dignities would be restored. Alas, these promises amounted to nothing but hot air, and disappointment for Muslims.

Soon after AL JAMA-AH got its first parliamentary seat in the 2019 National Elections, it started fighting to realise its election promises. Among these was to ensure that Muslim marriages would be legally registered.

There is now no need for a lawyer and a notary as Home Affairs will register the Nikah as ‘out of community of property”

This goal was achieved in 2023 – a few months before the 2024 National Elections was announced.  For this commendable result, the chairs of Parliament applauded Honourable Ganief Hendricks and Al Jama-ah for the work that was painstakingly undertaken over many months. A significant relief to Muslims is that there is now no need for a lawyer and a notary as Home Affairs will register the Nikah as ‘out of community of property’, unless otherwise requested.
We understood most Muslim couples cannot afford these extra costs.
Surviving spouses can now also get a valid Muslim marriage certificate, which they could not do before.

Our election promise –

This goal has now been achieved just before Hon Ganief’s five year term in Parliament comes to an end on 29 May 2024. If he gets your vote his election promise is a Muslim personal law shariah court.

Al Jama-ah thanks its voters and says: “watch this space! Our fight for the rights of ALL has just started! And WE have shown that WE DELIVER!”
