PRESS RELEASE
NO EMBARGO

22 July 2024

AL JAMA-AH applauds the appointment of Salmaan Moerat as the Springbok rugby captain and wishes him well:

Al Jama-ah Party in particular the South African community in general are indeed proud of Salmaan Moerat being selected as the Springbok captain.

We are all elated that the coach and his selection committee chose Salmaan Moerat for this prestigious position: let us stress that for the Moerat family, rugby runs in their veins. We too assume that in the Paarl region where he is from, they rejoice that another – besides Pieter de Villiers – from that region managed to move up ladder into the significant rugby position. He is a proud South African and we are aware that for many other individuals it took long to reach this level.

Those from Paarl and surrounding areas as well as Greater Cape Town have, in fact, produced many talented and respected rugby players. Now that Salmaan Moerat was given a chance to lead the Springbok team, it only illustrates that we have several others like him; so, we commend the selectors for having made a good choice.

Salmaan Moerat, belonging to a coterie of young rugby enthusiasts that honed his skills from a young age and was inspired by elders including his father who was a well- known rugby player too. We must argue that Salmaan Moerat – humble like the cricketer Hashim Amla – has matured over the years.

Because of hard work, he proved that he is not just a gifted team player but an exceptional team leader who has the ability to read the rugby game well. He has reached this stage of his promising career and has a bright future ahead. Apart from having shown skills as a team player at both the club and provincial levels, he demonstrated that at the national level. This was indeed the case in Saturday’s (20 July 2024) international match he successfully captained against Portugal.

Al Jama-ah wishes Salmaan Moerat well on this new journey as the Springbok’s captain, and the leadership congratulates him on a commendable achievement. The mere fact that he was selected to lead the team points to the fact that he is indeed a notable player with Excellent natural talents on and off the field. As far as we know, he is not just a quality sports person but a worthy captain who is a game-changer!
