AL JAMA-AH PAYS TRIBUTE TO A RESILIENT RIVIONIA TRIALIST, ANDREW MLANGENI
The AL JAMA-AH is saddened by the passing of struggle hero and ANC Rivonia trialist, comrade Andrew Mlangeni.
The 95-year-old Tata Mlangeni was the last surviving Rivonia trialist. He was admitted to hospital a week ago following abdominal pains and passed on during the night. In 1992 Mlageni was awarded Isithwalandwe Seaparankwe-the highest honour by the ANC for those who have made an outstanding contribution to the liberation struggle.
AL JAMA-AH’S Member in Parliament, Hon, Ganief Hendricks recalls feedback from several visitors to the trialists on Robben Island, on Mlangeni’s resilience and how he served as an inspiration to other prisoners. Hendricks late mother, Ghairooneessa Hendricks had two safe houses in District Six where she hid many political activists and also offered a place to stay to families who visited their loved ones on Robben Island.
Mlangeni’s life of which was mostly that of incarceration on Robben Island served as an example of sacrifice for the liberation of South Africa. We can only hope that our youth will take cognisance of his sacrifices made as a political prisoner and as a humble person who cared deeply for humanity.
May his soul rest in peace, our condolences to the Mlangeni family, the ANC, friends and comrades of this great struggle hero.
