On Monday 28 October, The Department of Social Development launched the Social Security Review Volume 2.
This event brought together experts and policymakers to share educational insights on how COVID-19 shaped social protections for South Africans.
The Department of Social Development, in collaboration with the Human Sciences Research Council (HSRC), launched the Social Security Review Volume 2 in Cape Town, under the theme “Social Security in the Time of COVID.”
At the official launch of the Social Security Review Volume 2, Deputy Minister of Social Development, Mr. Ganief Hendricks, urged thought leaders and stakeholders to move beyond posing questions and instead contribute viable solutions towards fortifying South Africa’s social protection systems.
Deputy Minister Ganief Hendricks Raised the Possibility Of Universal Basic Income Grant
Speaking at the launch of the Social Security Review Volume 2 on Monday, the Deputy Minister of Social Development, Ganief Hendricks, noted that the Covid-19 pandemic made it possible for South Africa to open up a national discourse on social protection policy choices that were long overdue — including the possibility of a universal basic income grant.
Social security is key to creating a conducive environment for proven poverty alleviation programs and promoting sustainable livelihoods.
Through this publication, the Department seeks to generate new knowledge, information and critical analysis to ensure evidence-based decision and policy making in the field of social security. Drawing from comprehensive research to deepen our understanding of social security’s benefits amid the rising challenges of poverty, unemployment, and inequality.
