AL JAMA-AH’S ONLY WOMAN LAWMAKER MAKES WAVES
She became Al Jama-ah’s first councillor and progressed to become its second Member of Parliament also making her the party’s first female lawmaker at that level.
Hon Adv. Shameemah Salie hardly needs introduction, her appearances on social media are a manifestation of her hard work in various communities.
She is married with five children, and has striked a unique balance between work, personal life and her community work. She was a public servant for many years serving as a Family advocate in the Department of Justice and State advocate in the office of the National Prosecuting Authority until 2015.
Since she started practicing her career, she dealt with matters which negatively impacted on the lives of women, children and the elderly. Her experience in law is not limited to but a large area of her focus areas that continues today is her focus in assisting the gender based violence matters by ensuring that victims have adequate access to facilities for victim empowerment and support during those traumatic times.
Adv Salie is an ambassador in several NPO/ NPC and this has increased her reach over the years in assistance of several communities in need through various projects and appeals.
When she joined Al Jama-ah full-time she continued and intensified her groundwork within communities which had commenced since a young age coming from a family background deeply involved in empowerment, upliftment of the most marginalised.
In Al Jama-ah she continued assisting with various upliftment and empowerment projects. She does not restrict herself to certain areas, she moves where the needs are, and that is within the most vulnerable communities: women, children, the elderly and persons with disabilities.
Salie is further actively involved in the Al Jama-ah women’s league and on the forefront of community projects and assistance within the relevant league. She also championed the rights of pilgrims who embarkrd on the holy journey of hajj and umrah (the lesser pilgrimage) and has been on the forefront of assisting, educating and fundraising pilgrims to fulfill obligations as well as protecting pilgrims from concerning actions within the relevant industry.
Salie has for decades been a supporter of the Palestinian cause and the freedom of Palestine. Her activism and assistance towards the Palestinian cause and fight against genocide and oppressions in Palestine, DRC, Kashmir and many other areas are well known.
Adv Salie has further grown up in a family involved and connected to sports and continues assistance to and outreach through sports.
Adv Salie as an MP incorporates her education, skills and background and serves on the portfolio committees of Sports, Arts and Culture; International Relations and as alternative on Justice.
