PRESS RELEASE
NO EMBARGO
01 July 2024
Al Jama-ah Congratulates its second Member of Parliament who was sworn in earlier today:
Al Jama-ah Party is pleased to announce the swearing in of its second Member of Parliament, Adv Shameemah Salie.
She was sworn in earlier today in the Speaker’s Boardroom at Parliament. The party has secured two Member of Parliament (MP) posts, while the first post returned to the party’s leader, Hon Ganief Hendricks (who is now the newly appointed Deputy Minister of Social Development), there were internal party challenges when the party wanted to have the second candidate, namely Councillor Imraan Ismail Moosa, sworn in.
The party has a right to deploy its members where it suits best. Since Moosa occupies a very important position in the City of Johannesburg where he is the chairperson of EISD (Environment Infrastructure and Services Department), the party felt it would be best for him to continue in that position until May next year to take up his position as MP.
“This interim measure gives Adv. Salie the necessary parliamentary experience. The party is training its members on how to work in various spheres of government. Moosa holds a very crucial position which is on the same level as a Member of Parliament. He is a loyal party member and has accepted the party’s position that he completes his task as Chairperson of the EISD and along with the other two Councillors – Executive Mayor Kabelo Gwamanda and Thapelo Amad – to return Johannesburg as the iconic city it was,” explains Hendricks.
Adv Shameemah Salie has taken up the seat in Parliament and her position as councillor in the City of Cape Town will be filled by Adv. Yusuf Khan Dalwai. The party has strong people in place at local-, provincial (Western Cape)- and national levels. “I now must imagine the party without myself and is very confident that as we stand today, the party is in good hands,” says Hendricks.
Al Jama-ah extends its heartfelt congratulations to Member Salie and is confident that she would continue to be the party’s dissenting voice in Parliament.
