Al Jama-ah calls on President of South Africa to give an executive for the release of all impounded taxis:

Al Jama-ah has written to President Cyril Ramaphosa to give an executive order to the City of Cape Town to release all taxis it impounded since the beginning of the strike.

The Party’s Member of Parliament Hon Ganief Hendricks says the party agrees with Transport Minister Sindisiwe Chikunga’s latest statement: ‘it’s time for the State to regulate the taxi industry.”

The Party says that the taxi owners or operators who have committed offences, must be brought to court. “By releasing the impounded taxis, the City of Cape Town and the Western Cape Legislature will act in a positive way and open the doors to bring an end to the taxi strike,” says Hendricks.

He says the Party will pursue talks with the City of Cape Town Mayor, Geordin Hill- Lewis to support the call from Minister Chikunga to release impounded taxis. “Acceding to the Minister’s call is not an act of capitulating but displaying responsible leadership,” says Hendricks.

Thousands of poor families in the Western Cape are hard hit by the strike as they are losing out on earnings and learners are unable to access their schools. The Party is saddened by the loss of life and the damages caused to private properties. “We note that Santaco has launched a court interdict to have their impounded taxis released and call on the judge to rule with fairness, taking into consideration that taxi operators do have genuine grievances and that the on-going strike is affecting thousands of poor families on the Cape Flats and surrounding areas, he adds.
